Last Saturday, we were happy to be invited to take part in Super Science Saturday at the Sidmouth Science Festival. We had 10 volunteers on our stand, teaching the public about the latest James Webb discoveries through their latest images, and teaching children about aerodynamics by making improved nose cones for stomp rockets, which we launched outside. We also had the chance to explore other stands, including those of the Exeter Maths School who we shared a room with, and the Exeter Science Centre, where one of our volunteers spent the day helping deliver their exoplanet-themed stand.
The following weekend, our President Alex McGinty delivered a talk alongside fellow student Almudena Visser Velez at the Norman Lockyer Observatory as part of their Family Day. Almudena discussed the life cycle of stars, from how they form in big molecular clouds to how massive stars die in supernovae explosions. After that, Alex spoke about the diverse range of exoplanets we have discovered since 1995 and how no two planets are alike.
We can only hope our next outreach stand, at the Festival of Physics in Bristol, is as successful, and we hope to see you at next year’s Sidmouth Science Festival!
